Brief Summary:

Sheriffs Deputies responded with the Oaks Corners Fire Department and Phelps Ambulance to 459 Fisher Road after the residents (Mr. & Mrs. Symonds) could smell an ammonia type odor and then experienced dizziness.

Mr. Dendis owns several Anhydrous Ammonia tanks on the property behind the Symonds Residence. It was determined that the valve on one of the tanks malfunctioned allowing a small amount of the Anhydrous Ammonia to leak out from a drain hose (less than two gallons and was considered a minor spill). Once the leak was confirmed, Phelps Fire Department, the Ontario and Seneca County Haz-Mat Teams, Lyons Ambulance and Finger Lakes Advanced Life Support responded. A representative of Laird Farms in Seneca County who services the tanks also responded and assisted with stopping the leak and replacing the faulty valve.

The Symonds were evaluated by EMS personnel at the scene but declined transport to the hospital. Fisher Road between CR 6 and Rt. 14 was closed from approximately 8:45 PM - 11 PM. Residents within the affected area were contacted by the 911 Center and advised to shelter in place while the leak was contained and cleaned.

There were no other reported injuries or property damage as a result.   Case closed.
