Flying Whale Studios in conjunction with Finger Lakes Credit Union presents "Every Specimen Becomes a Relic," an exhibition of photographs by local artist Kevin Schoonover, beginning Aug. 5 at the Credit Union, 27 Seneca St. in Geneva. The images will be on display in the lobby and upper offices until Oct. 28. An opening reception with the artist is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Aug. 5. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments, including a wine tasting from Billsboro Winery, will be available. "Every Specimen Becomes a Relic" is composed of over 20 photos offering depictions of rural and urban blight, and some of the natural wonders that surround us but often go unnoticed. Semi-abstract patterns and textures play an important role in Schoonover's pieces. The interplay of light and shadow on ordinary surfaces combined with muted or jarringly bright colors all help create an original way of seeing the world. "I've always loved sad, broken buildings and places," noted Schoonover. "There's something wistful and heartbreaking in the decay and ruin that calls to me. At the same time, I'm also drawn to those spontaneous and uninhibited moments of joy that are constantly occurring... if you know where to look. I hope my work reflects this duality and that the audience shares and appreciates this sensibility." Whether it's a weather-pounded dune fence receding to the ocean's edge, or the crumbling brick backside of a downtown Geneva tenement, or the serenity of an endless blue sky hugging the even bluer horizon line of Lake Ontario, Schoonover's eye is always on the lookout for that which we all look at, but rarely see. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology's graphic design program, Schoonover served as executive director of Wayne County Council for the Arts for five years and the Finger Lakes Regional Arts Council/Smith Opera House, where he had the same title, for nearly 10. He left The Smith last year and started Flying Whale Studios, a professional arts business specializing in the creation of photography and fine art, graphic design, and grant writing and publicity for area non-profit organizations. He lives in Geneva with his wife, Mary. They have two grown children, Zachary and Hannah. This is the first local exhibition of the award-winning photographer's work. Regular Credit Union hours are Monday to Wednesday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Call FLCU at 315-781-1334 for details. Visit www.FlyingWhaleStudios.com to see examples of Schoonover's work.

Operatic baritone Jimi James, international pianist/composer Roger Steptoe, cellist Andrew Yee, and speaker Eleanor Stearns perform a musical homage to Theodore Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 18 at the Smith Opera House, 82 Seneca St. The program includes repertoire performed between 1904 and 1908 at The Smith and at Roosevelt's White House by "America's Greatest Baritone," David Bispham, and Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. Jimi James sings works that Bispham performed at the Smith Opera House in 1906 including "Danny Deever" and the Prologue from Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci" -- a Verdi aria Bispham sang at the Metropolitan Opera in 1902 -- and other works popular in Theodore Roosevelt's day. Founding member of the acclaimed Attacca Quartet, cellist Andrew Yee will perform works Casals played at the White House on January 15, 1904 by Boccherini, David Popper and Saint-Saens, the great cello sonata Debussy wrote in 1915 during the First World War, and "Sonatine II" composed by Roger Steptoe in memory of cellist Hilayama Manabu, first cellist of the Ibaraki Symphony Orchestra and father to local arts patron Nozomi Williams. David Bisham sang at the White House on January 8, 1904 in a program that featured works by American composers such as Edward MacDowell and "the harrowing Danny Deever" by opera conductor Walter Damrosch, to which Roosevelt responded: "By Jove, Mr. Bispham, that was bully! With a song such as that you could lead a nation into battle!" On the roster of the Metropolitan Opera from 1900 to 1903, Bispham performed on the Smith Opera House stage in 1906 and again in 1908 under the auspices of the Geneva Choral Society, a group that presented events at The Smith from 1894 until the 1950s. Bispham was Roosevelt's "favorite" baritone. His recordings include "Long Day to Tipperary" and "Danny Deever." Casals remained in the public eye for more than half a century after playing for Roosevelt. A musical icon known world wide through recordings and international festivals bearing his name, he again played in the White House for President John Kennedy in the 1960s. With the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the youngest President in the Nation's history. He brought new excitement and power to the Presidency, as he vigorously led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. Presented by American Landmark Festivals with the Smith Center for the Arts, the concert is dedicated to its founding director, conductor/pianist Francis Heilbut, a life-long admirer of Theodore Roosevelt, with whom he shared a birthday and a commitment to the "life of strenuous endeavor." Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for college students and senior citizens, and no charge for children K -12. Tickets are available at the Smith Opera House, by calling 315-781-LIVE (5483) or toll-free 1-866-355-LIVE (5483), and online at www.TheSmith.org. The Smith accepts MasterCard, Visa and Discover. Box office hours are weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Contact the box office for more information.
