The nation’s longest-running global affairs education program returns to Ferris Hills at West Lake in February with an eight-week series featuring discussions on a variety of topics facing the U.S. abroad. Great Decisions, a program of the Foreign Policy Association, is open not only to residents but to the general public. It meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on eight consecutive Wednesdays, beginning February 10. Each session is led by a content expert who facilitates group discussions aimed at broadening public input into foreign policy. Topics for the 2010 series are as follows: • Feb. 10 – The Special Envoy in American Foreign Policy, with the Rev. Richard Hart, retired from the Geneva Presbyterian Church • Feb. 17 – Halting Atrocities in Kenya, with the Rev. Fred Magley, retired from the United Church in Canandaigua • Feb. 24 – Transnational Crime: Globalization’s Shadowy Stepchild, with Don Barton, retired, of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station • March 3 – The Global Financial Crisis and Its Effects, with Al Thomas, a retired chemist • March 10 – The U.S. and the Persian Gulf, with Dr. Lloyd Lill Jr., retired from Empire State College • March 17 – Europe’s “Far East”: The Uncertain Frontier, with James Bruce, retired from Eastman Kodak • March 24 – Enhancing Security Through Peacebuilding, with Cal Brainard, a Seneca Falls attorney • March 31 – China Looks at the World: The World Looks at China, with Al Johnson, retired from GTE Sylvania There is no cost to attend the discussions. The community is invited to the Ontario County Agriculture Appreciation Celebration on Friday, March 19, 2010 at Steamboat Landing, Canandaigua. A diverse group of agriculture industry representatives will gather for this event to recognize the vital importance of agriculture in Ontario County and to honor industry leaders.
The evening begins at 6:00 pm with a social time premiering Ontario County wines and juices and chance to participate in a silent auction to benefit the 4-H Scholarship Fund. The banquet will follow with a buffet dinner, which will include a dessert table featuring Ontario County desserts.
Awards for excellence and innovation in agriculture will be presented at the banquet including the Rodney Lightfoote Agricultural Viability and Innovation Award for Ontario County. The keynote speaker will be Mark Maslyn. He serves as Executive Director of Public Policy for the American Farm Bureau whose priorities include farm policy and commodity issues, rural development, budget and tax policy, labor and environmental regulation, energy and expansion of international trade. Maslyn joined the American Farm Bureau in 1984 after having worked with the New York Farm Bureau for 3 years and the New York State legislature for 5 years. He is a native of the Canandaigua area in the agriculturally diverse “Finger Lakes” region of western New York and his involvement with farming is life-long. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York.
