Canandaigua, NY – Plant and animal waste occurs on any farm, operation, but how you manage this waste could save you time and money. One management option that appeals to small farm operators is composting. Composting could be the answer if you have limited land for waste disposal. The end product from composting is a valuable soil amendment. Compost could be used back into your agricultural production system or sold as a value added product that generates additional farm income. You might even reduce your energy needs by capturing the heat during the composting process and use it to heat your barn or greenhouse. To learn more, join Jean Bonhotal, Cornell Waste Management Institute, Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Cornell University as she addresses selecting and setting up a compost sight, labor / management requirements, and how to compost efficiently. Other topics she will discuss will be the pros and cons to composting, composting mortalities, heat recovery from composting and how worm composting might fit in.
This workshop is for you, if you raise a few or a hundred head of livestock; fruit or vegetable grower selling at a farm stand, market or CSA; or if you are a greenhouse grower selling bedding plants. This program will get you on the path for success in composting.
 Class fee: $15 per person
