Is the bitter winter cold and snow getting you down? Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park’s orchid programs may be the remedy you need! Sonnenberg is offering a pair of events that are designed not only to give attendees a breath of spring in the vibrant, living color of the blooming orchids in Sonnenberg’s impressive collection, but also how to be able to successfully grow these stunning tropical plants at home.
Sonnenberg’s orchid programs kick-off on March 1st with the “For the Love of Orchids” workshop. Workshop attendees will learn about these amazing plants -- orchids are the largest family of flowering plants on earth and they can be found on every continent except Antarctica and in almost every kind of habitat -- with Joe Kunisch, of Bloomfield Orchids. Joe will teach attendees orchid basics as well as the techniques and tricks necessary for growing these beautiful plants at home. The workshop will be held on March 1, 10 AM – 3 PM and is $20 per person. A soup lunch will be provided and pre-paid reservations are required.
Less than a week later, Sonnenberg continues its orchid offerings with its ever popular Annual Orchid Show & Sale. At this show, flower fans of all ages will delight in exotic blooms showcased in Sonnenberg’s working, historic Lord & Burnham greenhouse complex. On display, guests will find colorful Cattleyas and Cymbidiums, delicate Dendrobiums, pretty Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilums and more. This year’s event will be held Friday – Sunday, March 7 – 9 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM each day. General admission to the event is $5 per person.
During the Orchid Show educational seminars on orchid care will be offered at 11 AM and 2 PM Saturday and 2 PM Sunday. On Friday, guests can take advantage of special orchid re-potting services (donation for service requested). Wine tasting will also be available in the Sonnenberg Gift Shop on Saturday from noon – 4:00 PM and Sunday from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. A variety of orchids and orchid supplies will be on sale in the Sonnenberg Gift Shop for visitors to take home.
Both the workshop and orchid show will be held at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park which is located at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua, NY. For more details or to register for the Love of Orchids workshop, call 585-394-4922 or visit Sonnenberg’s website at www.sonnenberg.org.
