Opening Reception and Exhibit: Rhapsody in Blue (Sky and Water)
It often seems that late winter weather brings on a case of the late winter blues. At the Arts Center of Yates County, a late March exhibit aims not only to combat those winter blues but to celebrate the blues that surround us. “Rhapsody in Blue” is the second exhibit in 2017 to focus on the theme of Earth Art. Featuring work from photographer Howard LeVant and glass artist Eli Applebaum, the exhibit will include works from many local and regional artists that focus on the blues of the sky and streams, ponds, lakes and oceans.
After studying under some of the top professional photographers of the age at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Howard LeVant spent almost 20 years as a commercial studio photographer in Chicago. He began teaching advertising photography at RIT in 1978 and is currently Professor Emeritus at that institution after a distinguished teaching career that included digital imaging, advertising and business course. He was also the food photographer for Wegmans for almost a decade. Last year LeVant’s alma mater honored him by creating a permanent archive of his work.
Prattsburgh resident Eli Applebaum has been working in a glass studio for more than half his life, starting as a jack-of-all-trades in his father Leon’s studio at age 13. Applebaum was fascinated by the craft of glass blowing and enjoyed a variety of perspectives on the craft gained over the years from a series of studio apprentices from Eastern Europe. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in international affairs and finance, Applebaum has continued to develop his glass blowing skills by apprenticing with glass artists in the Czech Republic and Holland and the Simon Pearce glass studio in Vermont. His last adventure was working glass on a Celebrity Cruise ship through a demonstration program organized by the Corning Museum of Glass.
The opening reception for Rhapsody in Blue will be held on Friday, March 24 from 5-7 pm at the Arts Center of Yates County’s Flick Gallery, 127 Main Street in Penn Yan. This free event will feature music, wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to talk with the artists. Everyone is welcome to chase away their late winter blues at Rhapsody in Blue, which will be on display through the month of April.
