Penn Yan Mayor Encouraged by Funding News

More relief is on the way.

As we reported Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo has written President Barack Obama a letter requesting a federal disaster declaration for Yates County following last month's severe flooding.

Another big boost has been announced for the Yates County Endowment's Disaster Relief Fund.  Rochester-based Realtors Charitable Foundation has donated 20 thousand dollars for flood relief. The money will be matched by a local business to assist with housing needs.

Penn Yan Mayor Leigh MacKerchar says the response by government at all levels so far has been  quick.

In addition to the government funding, private donations of time, money and service continue from within and from outside the county. MacKerchar said he's appreciative.

MacKerchar adds that village damage assessments from the flood are almost complete.

Kiwanis is having a giveaway on Friday at the American Legion on Himrod Road, Penn Yan from noon to three. They have clothes, paper goods, some used toys and more for flood victims. Others who are in need can come.
