Camp Monterey Officially Closed

After almost a year of efforts to keep it open, the Monterey Shock Incarceration Facility officially closed its doors Saturday. Last year, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he would close four prisons in New York this month and would provide affected employees with reassignment to other state facilities.

Monterey was the state correction department's first shock facility and celebrated its 25th year of operation two years ago. Cost savings and a drop in inmate population across the state were reasons given by the Governor to close the facilities.
