SYRACUSE -- A 35-year-old Syracuse man, Scott Miles, has pled not guilty to charges he broke into a home, and badly beat up a 12-year-old boy; the alleged assault happened last September in Salina, at the Orchard Estates apartments.
A Level 3 registered sex offender, Miles lawyer says he has mental health issues, and that he’s taking medicine to control his unidentified condition; no word on whether Miles may have been off his meds when he was alleged to have assaulted the child. The boy suffered life-threatening injuries; police saying Miles used a pool cue at one point. Authorities believe Miles may have been targeting the boy's mother; she was not at home at the time of the attack, and the boy was sleeping in her bed.
Miles is a two-time felon; in 2002, he served two to four years in state prison for third-degree burglary, and in 1998, he was convicted of third-degree rape and first-degree attempted sexual abuse, in a case involving a teenage girl.
Miles faces 25 years in state prison if convicted of this latest crime.
