AURORA -- Wells College is once again hosting the Book Arts Summer Institute.
The Institute runs for three weeks, from July 8 to 28; course offerings include calligraphy, bookbinding, printing, paper engineering, typecasting and design. For more information, go to the Wells College website, at www.wells.edu, and search for "summer institute."
Wells' has had a very successful book arts program since 1993, and their history in such a field extends back to 1941 when Austrian-born Victor Hammer, fleeing Europe in 1939, founded the Wells College Press two years later; Hammer was one of the 21st century's leading typographers, printers, and graphic artists of his time.
The Book Arts Center at Wells, also, currently has numerous printing presses -- seven Vandercook presses, two Pilot presses, Victor Hammer’s Washington-style hand press and over 300 cases of type and ornaments.
