Conquest Horses Getting Better at Cracker Box Palace

ALTON -- Three weeks ago, the State Police and animal control officers found 10 horses living in deplorable conditions at a farm in Conquest; one horse was so sick a vet said it had to be put down immediately. Three of the horses were then taken to Cracker Box Palace in Alton, an animal rescue farm in northern Wayne County. Co-owner Cheri Roloson says the horses are recovering.

The horse that has improved the most, Roloson says, is a mare estimated to be around 15 years old. Another of the horses, a miniature horse, has breathing problems largely due to being confined to a stall every day and night, a stall that was filled with manure. The horses are clearly happy to be able to run around outdoors again, Roloson said.

Cracker Box Palace is holding an Open House this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
