SYRACUSE -- A 35-year-old Syracuse man, Scott Miles, was sentenced to 20 years in state prison today for severely beating a 12-year-old boy with a pool cue; Miles was arrested after the boy recognized his picture on Facebook. The vicious attack took place last September in Salina, at the Orchard Estates apartments.
Miles is a registered Level 3 sex offender, and two-time felon -- in 2002, he served 2-4 for third-degree burglary; and in 1998, he was convicted of raping a teenage girl. Miles' lawyer argued he was mentally ill when the crime took place; the victim suffered life-threatening injuries.
Although Miles did not admit so at trial, it's believed he was obsessed with the boy's mother, and was targeting her; she was not at home at the time of the attack, and the boy was sleeping in her bed.
