The storm that swept through Seneca Falls on May 27th caused severe damage to the Hotel Clarence. The Hotel Clarence was formally the Gould Hotel built in 1918. In 2008 this historical property went through a major renovation to give it more of a modern flare. Also housed at the Hotel Clarence is a top of the line restaurant featuring a contemporary Italian cuisine called “The Kitchen”.
The storm damaged the hard wood flooring in the bar and dinning area, which will need to be replaced. There was also tremendous water damage to the front of the building, the banquet room, the third floor and two rooms on the second floor. Shockingly the 90 mph winds picked up a portion of the roof and damaged the actual brick on the building. It is estimated that the repairs can take a month or more to finish.
On the night of the storm the hotel lost power for more than seven hours resulting in all guests having to be evacuated and, the loss of food items. Water damage closed the bar and restaurant for just about a week. “The Kitchen” Restaurant and Bar reopened on June 5th, for lunch and dinner, despite the damage and will under go more repairs in the upcoming days.
This unexpected storm came and went in a flash but The Hotel Clarence and other business in the area will not soon forget how it crippled the area.
