A Port Byron woman and a Clifton Springs woman were killed Tuesday in a accident involving a car, a sport-utility vehicle and a school bus in Montezuma.
Cayuga County Sheriffs day 43-year old Dawn M. Wilder-Smith, of East Loop Road, Port Byron, and 73-year old Ann L. Eider of 20 Kendall St., Clifton Springs were killed in the crash.
Wilder-Smith was driving a 2007 Nissan SUV north about 6 p.m. Tuesday on Route 90 when her SUV crossed into the path of a southbound Seneca Falls Central School District bus. The SUV hit the bus, continued in the southbound lane and struck a 2011 Kia being driven by 53-year old Penny L. Eider, also of the Kendall Street address.
Wilder-Smith and Ann Eider were dead at the scene, officials said. Ann Eider was a front seat passenger in the Kia.
Penny Eider and her rear-seat passenger, 73- year old Roger L. Eider, both were airlifted to Upstate University Hospital. Roger Eider, who is Penny Eider’s father and who also lives at the Kendall Street address, was in serious condition this morning while Penny Eider was in good condition, sheriff’s officials said.
The bus was being driven by 54-year old James D. Fulkerson, of 112 State St., Seneca Falls, deputies said. It was carrying 15 members of the district's varsity wrestling team and two coaches back from a match in Port Byron.
One student was taken to Geneva General Hospital with what officials called a very minor injury. No one else on the bus was hurt.
Investigators are unsure why the Nissan crossed into the oncoming lane. Officials asked anyone with information on the accident to call Detective Timothy Axton at 253-1132.
