Two SU football players are in trouble. Police say Steve Rene was loudly arguing with people in the middle of a street early Sunday morning. When cops tried moving Rene to the sidewalk, they say the junior running back started cursing. Then, police say, Rene returned to the street and began yelling at the officers. That's when Marquis Spruill got into the mix. He's a junior linebacker. Officials say Spruill got behind one of the cops and grabbed the front upper portion of his uniform with both hands.
Spruill was eventually pushed to the ground and handcuffed. Rene was finally subdued after a police patrol dog struck him twice with his muzzle in the back. But the chaos did not end there. Police say Spruill began kicking the inside of a squad car aggressively, then kicked the door with such force that it almost hit one of the cops in the face.
Rene is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, while Spruill was charged with disorderly conduct and second degree harassment. Both reportedly were drunk during all this.
Head coach Doug Marrone says the school is aware of the situation, and that it will be handled in an appropriate fashion.
