Monterey Fire Chief And Treasurer Arrested For Embezzlement

A Schuyler County fire chief and his wife were arrested Friday, accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from their volunteer fire department. State Police say Monterey Fire Chief Larry States and his wife, Kimberly, who served as department treasurer, misappropriated more than $100,000 of department funds over five years. An investigation by the Comptroller's office discovered that the couple used the money to help pay for their home mortgage, cell phones, groceries, concert tickets, family vacations and a personal vehicle.

Comptroller DiNapoli has requested that an investigation at the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department, where Larry States serves as sergeant and jail administrator.

The audit of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department began in August, 2012.

Quote from Comptroller DiNapoli:

"For more than five years, these officials were able to embezzle department funds to help pay for their home mortgage, cell phones, groceries, concert tickets, family vacations and a personal vehicle," State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said. "Unfortunately, my office continues to uncover cases where public figures abuse their positions to enrich themselves at the expense of taxpayers. Thankfully, the coordinated efforts of the New York State Police and members of my staff helped bring these individuals to justice. My office will fully look into the wrongdoing of these individuals to ensure that any inappropriate activity is identified."
