Hornellsville Trooper Shooter Sentenced Friday

Richard Van Gorden, the Steuben County man that was convicted of attempting to murder two New York State Troopers that were chasing him in the Town of Hornellsville in September 2011, was sentenced 40 years to life in Steuben County Court Friday.


38 year old Van Gorden was charged with two felony counts of attempted murder, multiple felony counts of reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. Van Gorden led police on a chase in the town of Hornellsville September 27th that ended with the Addison man firing multiple gunshots into a state police cruiser that was occupied by two troopers. Van Gorden and his 19 year old female passenger were eventually located later that day in the town of Wellsville and surrendered only after tear gas was used to drive them out of the trailer they were in.
