Broken Water Pipe Floods Canandaigua Library

Canandaigua's Wood Library is  closed today after a pipe burst in its sprinkler system and caused flooding on the first and second floors yesterday afternoon.

According to the Daily Messenger, the water flow lasted about eight minutes before the valve was turned off, several second-floor books were damaged by the water. Part of the ceiling where the flood originated collapsed.

Water also went down the stairs and through the ceiling to the first floor.

About 24 people — including staff and visitors — were in the library at the time of the incident. No one was injured.

The total cost of the damage has not been determined.

Wood Library News Release -

Canandaigua library will be closed Tuesday, February 19

Wood Library, located at 134 N Main St, Canandaigua, sustained significant water damage today resulting from a burst pipe in its sprinkler system.  The library will be closed to the public on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, for clean-up operations and to make sure that all building systems are operable and safe.

In a prepared statement, Library Director Jenny Goodemote provided this update:

“At about 3:00 PM this afternoon, February 18, the library’s fire alarms sounded as a result of a burst pipe.  Library patrons and staff cleared the building without incident and the Canandaigua City Fire Department was called.  The fire department arrived and managed to turn off the water.  They also shut down the library’s power as a precautionary measure.  Unfortunately, the building and some of our collections have sustained water damage.

Clean-up operations are underway.

The library is now closed to the public and will remain closed on Tuesday, February 19.  All normally scheduled activities and programs have been canceled or postponed.

Once we have assessed the building’s operating systems to be sure they are functioning the way they should and are safe, we will make a determination about opening the library to the public.  We are doing everything we can at this time to prepare for a reopening as soon as possible.”

Wood Library is a full-service public library chartered to serve everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District.   For the latest information about the library, its services and programs, call 585-394-1381 or go to its website at
