DEC crews will continue to work today to contain a spill of salt and diesel fuel that occurred when a tractor-trailer crashed into a Lamoka Lake tributary Tuesday night in the Town of Tyrone.
The tractor-trailer was carrying a full load of salt packaged in paper bags when it barreled down County Road 23 and the driver failed to negotiate the corner at the intersection with State Route 226. The tractor-trailer crashed through a guardrail and came to rest in about 15 feet of water. The driver, a 29 year old Tennessee man, was able to swim to shore and was treated at Schuyler Hospital for minor injuries.
DEC officials the truck had an estimated 150 to 300 gallons of diesel fuel in its tanks, according to the DEC’s Chad Kehoe, an environmental engineer and spill responder. As of Wednesday, no fishkills or other major environmental impacts had been reported as a result of the spill.
The cleanup is expected to last 2 or 3 more days.
