Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn Wins Tax-Exempt Status for Housing

The Merry-Go-Round Playhouse has been granted tax-exempt status for two apartment buildings it uses. The Auburn Citizen reports the Cayuga County Supreme Court ruled late last month that the playhouse can stop paying taxes on two apartment buildings it uses for housing staff during the theater season.

The buildings are on 112 Franklin Street and 230 Genesee Street. The playhouse is a tax-free organization, and the Appellate court says the housing is "incidental" to its operations.

Auburn City Attorney John Rossi tells the paper they plan on appealing the decision, over concerns the city's already crippling financial situation could now become worse with this loss of tax revenue.
