One Dead After Standoff in Steuben County

One man is dead after a standoff in the town of Savona last night in which gunshots were allegedly fired at Steuben County Sheriff's Deputies.

The incident started shortly before 9 p.m. at 7091 Velie Road, which is off County Route 16, when deputies were called for a reported domestic dispute. The suspect was holed up in a barn on that property and according to scanner traffic, started shooting a gun. At one point, deputies were told to take cover.

The suspect was then seen using an ax in an attempt to escape the barn. Police say the man then set the front half entrance of the barn on fire. Authorities say after the fire was put out, they found a body inside the barn. The body has been sent to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office in Rochester for identification.

Savona, Bath, Bradford, Hammondsport and Campbell firefighters all responded to the scene to extinguish the barn fire.
