Canal Supporters Lobby Against Lock Cutbacks

Supporters of the Erie Canal say shorter hours of operation for locks are hurting business in their communities.  In a conference call Friday, members of Canal New York pushed the Canal Corp to go back to the old hours of 7 AM to 10 PM. Lock hours were cut back to 8-6 this year, due to staff and budget cuts.  Canal New York chair Vicky Daly, the former Mayor of Palmyra, says lock traffic in Macedon is off by 53 percent.  The locks are kept open later for commercial cruise boats, but cruise operators say their customers don't know that, so night time cruise bookings are off.  There's been no comment from the Canal Corp.
