The port of Oswego is getting a million and a half dollar federal grant from the Department of Transportation. The so-called TIGER grant will allow the port to make upgrades to infrastructure and equipment so that it can meet future shipping demands. In announcing the grant, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand said the port is a jobs-boosting asset for central New York businessses. The money will be used to upgrade an aging rail line along the docks and to build new roads to a nearby six acre storage area. The grant will allow the port to leverage one-point-seven-five million in matching funds to bring the total investment in infrastructure upgrades to three-point-two million. The Senators noted that the project would create close to 100 construction jobs and prepare the regional port for a new era of increasing shipping demands.
