Some programs have been stopped temporarily because of the federal government shutdown. Although funding for the WIC program comes from federal grants, it's operated by the state. Cindy Walton tells Finger Lakes News Radio the local WIC program is not affected by what's going on in Washington.
WIC is a program that has been around several decades, and serves as additional nutritional aid for women, infants, and children. Walton says it serves a lot of people.
In Cayuga County, the WIC program is operated by the Health Department. That program is also still functioning despite the shutdown.
