FLCC Viticulture Center Breaks Ground

Calling it the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Finger Lakes wine industry, local and state leaders took part in groundbreaking ceremonies this afternoon for the three and a half million dollar Finger Lakes Community College Viticulture Center. The center will be built on the grounds of the Cornell Ag Tech Park in Geneva.

FLCC President Dr. Barbara Risser says the viticulture degree that will be offered will be the only one of its kind in the northeast.

The Director of the NY Agricultural Experiment Station, Dr. Tom Burr, says Cornell will be an active partner in the viticulture program.

Senator Michael Nozzolio played a key role in securing funding from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. He says the rise of the wine industry in the Finger Lakes can be attributed to research done at the Ag Tech Park.

Assemblyman Brian Kolb says the opening of the center will mark the beginning of an exciting economic future for the area.

Construction is expected to begin in January. The center is scheduled to open next August.
