State Police say a Phelps woman was distracted by a GPS system during a deadly accident that took the life of an Auburn woman.
According to State Police, 44-year-old Rebecca Lackey swerved into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane while she operated the navigation device Wednesday afternoon.
Police say 66-year old Janice Borromei of Auburn was the passenger in the second vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say charges are pending.
A three-car accident on Routes 5&20 left one person dead and two others injured after their vehicles collided in Montezuma Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened just east of Route 90 near the Seneca-Cayuga County border. Just before 2:30 police say an eastbound vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a passing vehicle traveling westbound.
Authorities say the driver of the second vehicle lost control and was hit by a third vehicle, a truck pulling a horse trailer that was also traveling west. The passenger of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to University Medical Center in Syracuse by Mercy Flight.
The driver of the first vehicle, Rebecca Lackey, of Phelps, was taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
The driver of the third vehicle declined medical treatment.
Police are not releasing the names of the driver of the second vehicle and their passenger killed in the crash until family members can be notified.
The horse suffered minor injuries.
Traffic was backed up on 5&20, 90, 318, and 89 for several hours while the accident was being investigated.
A four crash has backed traffic up on Routes 5&20 heading towards Auburn. The section of highway has been shut down.
Number of victims is unclear. According to reports at least one has been airlifted to the hospital.
Traffic is currently at a stand still. The accident occured near the Indian Head Golf Course.
