Donald A. Smith

Newark - Donald A. Smith, 81, died Saturday (October 5, 2013) at the Blossom View Nursing Home in Sodus. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday (October 9) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark where a funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lyons, with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas.
Mr. Smith was born on February 16, 1932, in Flint, Michigan, the son of Charles and Bessie Martin Smith. He served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Don was a member of the US Army Reserves from 1974 to 1980 and went active duty with the Army in 1981, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1992. He was a member of St. Michael Church and the August Mauer Post American Legion. Don volunteered at several jobs with the Wayne County Department of Aging, but primarily helping people with the taxes. He enjoyed working on his computer and researching his ancestry. Don was an avid reader and loved the Mets.
He is survived by wife of 60 years, Arlene Rehkugler Smith; his children Sherry (David) Carr of Newark; Scot of Rochester; Stephanie (John) Sumislawski of Auburn; Suzanne (Bernard Tibbs) VerStraete of Newark; Stuart (Lena) of Fort Worth, Texas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his sister Beverly Vickerman of Fla.; and his brother Jack of Flint, Mich.; several nieces and nephews.
Don was predeceased by his parents and three siblings.
