Phelps - Shirley M. Scherbyn, age 82, passed away on Monday (October 14, 2013) with her family by her side. There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass on Friday (October 18), 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Phelps. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. It is requested that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the House of John, 14 Spring Street, Clifton Springs, N.Y. 14432.
Mrs. Scherbyn was born on July 25, 1931 in Newark, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Mary Goebert Rehkugler. She graduated from Newark High School in 1949 and married John Scherbyn of Phelps in 1951. Mrs. Scherbyn worked for Montgomery Ward for several years before going to work at John G. Sweeney Agency in Phelps until she retired in 1993. She continued on doing bookkeeping for them and the Phelps Hotel. She was a member of St. Francis Church. In her earlier years she was an avid bowler in a bowling league, PTO, and a member of Chatty Crafters in the days when they did more chatting than crafting. She played in a Bonko league and was a member of the Phelps Croquet Club. What she enjoyed most was her Monday luncheons with the ladies, reading and crossword puzzles and babysitting her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by: her daughters Linda (Gary) Kirkwood and Kathy (Carl) Peake of Phelps; grandchildren Matt (Tanya) Meath, Kim (Derek Whitford) Reed, Todd (Christine) Kirkwood of Phelps, Kristin (Kyle) Mahoney of Clifton Springs, Jodi (Dan) Roberts and Greg Kirkwood of Penn.; great-grandchildren Amanda Kirkwood, Samantha and Michael Reed, Alaina and Emily Meath, Bailey and Kate Mahoney; sister Arlene Smith of Newark; many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years John Scherbyn.
Funeral arrangements have been made with the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main Street, Phelps.
