AUBURN | Mrs. Gladys Smith Howland, 83, of Van Anden Street, Auburn, joining her husband Dick, who predeceased her in 1997, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Auburn Community Hospital. As a lifelong Auburnian, Gladys was born on Oct. 27, 1929, the daughter of Stephen and Winifred Fulmer Smith and was a member of SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church. She retired in 2011 from Finger Lakes Answering Service, where she was a phone operator for many years. Gladys cherished the good times and laughs she enjoyed with her family and many friends, and the long walks with her beloved dog “Sid.� She is survived by three children, Barbara Gomez and her husband, Matthew, of Seattle, Richard G.S. Howland and his wife, Elizabeth, of Union Springs and Scott A. Howland, of Auburn; sister, Debbie Loperfido and her husband, Michael, of Auburn; grandchildren, Stacy Ritts and her husband, Nick, of Baldwinsville, Missy Loperfido and Jesse Cheovich, of Auburn and Stephen Gomez, of Seattle; great-granddaughter, Peyton Ritts and a niece, Nancy LaBell, of Watertown. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Farrell's Funeral Service, 84 South St., Auburn. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Soule Cemetery, Sennett. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY, 41 York St., Auburn, NY 13021, in memory of Gladys.
