Gary J. VanLiew

WATERLOO | Gary J. VanLiew, 68, of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Born in 1944 in Auburn, Gary was the son of the late Myron VanLiew and Loretta (Kortright) VanLiew. Gary retired from the New York State Gas and Electric Company in 2004, after 40 years of loyal service. He was a chief lineman, and was known by his crew as hardworking, tough, and safety-minded. In the late 1980s, Gary realized a dream in raising and showing Belgian Draft Horses. His late father, Myron, would often drive the team in competitions and it was a passion that they shared together. Gary and Joyce developed many long-lasting friendships through their horse-showing days. Gary was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandchildren. Gary was a good husband, provider, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Joyce (Powers); sons, Jeffrey (Barb), of Waterloo and Joseph (Sarah), of Elbridge; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Molly), Justin, Taylor, Kevin, Kyle, and Kelly. In addition, he is survived by twin sisters, Joan (Michael) Panek and Judy (Richard) Boedicker, both of Auburn, and sister, Barbara (Martin) Sheils, of Daphne, Ala. Arrangements are being handled by Covert Funeral Home, Ovid and per Gary's wishes, services will be private. A memorial celebrating Gary's life will be announced at a later date.
