It was a wonderful 5K run for 2.816 people Saturday in Seneca Falls, the town that many believe was the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the 1946 movie "It's a Wonderful Life".
Mary Owen, the daughter of actress Donna Reed, joined this year's "It's a Wonderful Life" celebration. Reed played Mary Hatch Bailey, the wife of George Baily, played by Jimmy Stewart in the holiday classic film.
Owen, joined Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu and Carol Coombs-Mueller who played Janie as they signed autographs and talked with fans of the movie from across the country.
Mike Polland of Avon gets a photo and autographs from Carol Coombs-Mueller, Mary Owen, and Karolyn Grimes Friday morning at the Seneca Falls Historical Society and Museum.
It's been documented that film Director Frank Capra came through Seneca Falls in late 1945 on his way to visit an aunt in Auburn. Seneca Falls residents believe he saw the plaque on the Bridge Street bridge honoring 19-year old Antonio Varacalli. The Italian immigrant jumped from the bridge into the canal on April 12, 1917 to save a woman who had jumped from the bridge. He rescued the woman but drowned in the process. There are many more similarities between Seneca Falls and Bedford Falls.
The big event Saturday was the 5th annual "It's a Wonderful 5K Run". It was the first time it was held in snowy weather. While organizers said over 3,500 people signed up for the race, 2,816 people finished the race, according to the official electronic scoring system.
