Major Drops Out, Backs Franklin in Cayuga Sheriff Race

Chris Major has ended his campaign for Cayuga County sheriff and is endorsing Rob Franklin for the position.

Major announced Monday that he is dropping out of the race following the Cayuga County Conservative Party’s endorsement meeting over the weekend. The party selected Franklin as its preferred candidate for sheriff.

Franklin had already secured the endorsement of the Cayuga County Republican Committee two weeks earlier, giving him the backing of both major local parties.

Major entered the race in November, saying he planned to seek both the Republican and Conservative nominations, even if it meant facing a primary election. After failing to secure either endorsement, he chose not to continue his campaign.

“The Conservative Party ran a fair, transparent and respectful process, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of it,” Major said in a statement. “Through that process, it became clear to me that Rob Franklin is the right choice to lead the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.”

Major said Franklin understands the challenges facing law enforcement and has the experience and values needed to lead the department.

Franklin is a detective lieutenant with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. With Major’s withdrawal, he is now the only major-party candidate in the race. No Democratic candidate has entered the contest, making Franklin the likely next sheriff unless a late challenger or write-in campaign emerges.

Franklin has received support from current Sheriff Brian Schenck, who is not seeking a third term, and former Sheriff David Gould, who hired Franklin as a deputy. He has also been endorsed by several members of the sheriff’s office.

Major, a retired Auburn police officer, received backing from outside the sheriff’s department, including former Auburn Police Chief James Slayton, the Auburn Teachers Association and Auburn Police Local 195.

Both Major and Franklin appeared before party leaders in endorsement meetings earlier this year. Franklin secured the Republican endorsement first, followed by the Conservative Party’s backing over the weekend.

Major had the option of collecting petitions to force primary elections but chose not to pursue that route.

“This experience introduced me to new people, strengthened existing friendships and reminded me what truly matters — faith, family, health and community,” Major said. “Politics is important, but it’s not everything.”

He said his endorsement is focused on what he believes is best for the county.

“I believe Rob Franklin will be a strong, conservative sheriff who will protect public safety, support law enforcement and serve this county with honor,” Major said.
