Seven decades of volunteer service to public safety were recognized this month in Wayne County.

During the West Walworth Volunteer Fire Department’s annual banquet last week, State Sen. Pam Helming presented a New York State Senate Commendation Award to longtime member Darwin Welker for his 70 years of service.

Welker joined the department in October 1955 and has served continuously as a volunteer firefighter ever since. Over the years, he held numerous leadership positions, including sergeant at arms, member of the board of directors, third assistant chief, second assistant chief, first assistant chief, chief, captain of TA-9 and captain of E-38. He served multiple terms in several of those roles.

The Welker family has been involved with the department since its founding, maintaining a long tradition of volunteer service in the community.

The New York State Senate Commendation Award is among the highest honors a state senator can present. It recognizes individuals whose leadership, volunteerism and long-term commitment have made a significant impact in their communities.

“Darwin Welker embodies the very best of public service,” Helming said in a statement. “This Commendation Award reflects our deep gratitude for his extraordinary 70 years of protecting his neighbors and strengthening the West Walworth Fire Department. His service is a powerful reminder of what it means to put community first.”

Helming also thanked local firefighters for their continued dedication to public safety.
