Hoax on Social Media Leads to Arrest in Keuka College Gun Scare

SHARE NOW

An 18-year-old Keuka College student has been charged with falsely reporting an incident after a social media post sparked a gun scare on campus late last month.

According to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the Keuka College campus in the early morning hours of January 28 following reports on social media claiming that an unknown person with a gun was on campus.

Following an investigation, deputies determined there was no actual threat to the college community. Authorities later traced the post to a student at the college.

The student, identified as an eligible youthful offender, was issued an appearance ticket on Monday for Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree. The individual is scheduled to appear in Jerusalem Town Court at a later date.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
