A major maintenance project is complete on one of Rochester’s most recognizable landmarks.
State officials announced the completion of a $6.2 million preventative maintenance painting project on the Frederick Douglass–Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge, which carries Interstate 490 over the Genesee River. The work marks the first major preventative maintenance project on the bridge since it opened in 2007.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the project will help preserve the bridge’s structural integrity and ensure it continues to serve as a major gateway into the city. The project was funded partially through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Crews removed old paint from the bridge’s three main arches and 12 braces and applied multiple coats of zinc- and epoxy-based paint. State transportation officials said the new coatings are designed to protect the structural steel from corrosion and weather damage and are expected to last between 10 and 15 years.
The bridge’s appearance remained unchanged, maintaining its signature color and design that has become a defining feature of Rochester’s skyline. The structure sees tens of thousands of vehicles each day and is considered both a transportation link and a visual symbol of the city.
State transportation officials said the completed work will reduce future maintenance needs while extending the bridge’s service life for years to come.
