DEC Reminds Anglers to Practice Safety as Ice Fishing Season Begins

SHARE NOW

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding ice anglers to prioritize safety this winter season. With the ice fishing season starting earlier than usual, DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton emphasized the importance of checking ice conditions before heading out.

“Ice fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and experience New York’s winter fishing opportunities,” Lefton said. “But with ice only just forming, anglers need to be extra cautious.”

Anglers should confirm that ice is at least four inches thick for safe walking and be aware that conditions can vary across a waterbody. Areas with moving water, near docks, or around bubblers should be approached with caution. Ice thickness can be checked using an auger or spud bar, and local bait and tackle shops can provide guidance on safe spots. Fishing with a group is also recommended for added safety.

For beginners or those new to ice fishing, DEC highlights the free freshwater fishing weekend on February 14–15, 2025, when fishing licenses are not required. The weekend is a chance for experienced anglers to introduce newcomers to the sport.

Ice fishing can give anglers access to the entire water body and can sometimes be more productive than open-water fishing. Beginners can consult DEC’s Ice Fishing Chapter in the I FISH NY Beginners Guide to Freshwater Fishing or watch six short instructional videos available on the DEC YouTube channel. The DEC website and HuntFishNY app provide details on open waters, fish species, and regulations.

Anglers using baitfish should follow DEC regulations to prevent the spread of invasive species and fish diseases. Key steps include using only certified disease-free baitfish, keeping receipts, and releasing unused bait and water on dry land. Personally collected baitfish may only be used in the same waterbody from which they were caught.

DEC also reminds all anglers to have a valid fishing license, which is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. For more information on ice fishing, regulations, and safety tips, visit the DEC ice fishing webpage.
