Micron Technology will officially break ground on its new megafab in Onondaga County next week. The project in the town of Clay has undergone a thorough environmental review and obtained the necessary permits, allowing construction and site preparation to commence.
The facility represents the largest private investment in New York state history and will feature some of the world’s most advanced memory manufacturing technology. Once complete, the site could house up to four fabs, making it the largest semiconductor facility in the United States. The plant is expected to support growing demand for AI systems, a key driver of the modern economy.
Micron Chairman, President, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, along with top executives, will be joined at the groundbreaking by federal, state, and local officials, including leaders from Congress and New York state government. Following the ceremony, remarks will be given at a celebration program at Syracuse University’s National Veterans Resource Center.
“Breaking ground at Micron’s New York megafab is a pivotal moment for Micron and the United States,” Mehrotra said. “As the global economy enters the AI era, leadership in advanced semiconductors will be the cornerstone of innovation and economic prosperity. Our investments solidify our position as the only United States manufacturer of memory.”
Senator Charles Schumer said the project represents years of work to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to Upstate New York. “We are finally just days away from putting the first shovel in the ground to fundamentally transform Upstate NY’s economy, bringing tens of thousands of good-paying jobs, and bringing semiconductor manufacturing back from overseas with Upstate NY leading the way,” Schumer said.
The groundbreaking will take place on January 16th.
