Utilities Brace for Weekend Winter Storm, Crews Pre-Staged

SHARE NOW

New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric say they are closely monitoring an approaching winter storm expected to bring frigid temperatures and snow to the Northeast this weekend.

Company officials say Winter Storm Fern is not currently forecast to cause widespread power outages across their service areas, but crews will be staffed around the clock and positioned across the region as a precaution. Snow is expected to move in on Sunday and continue into Monday.

NYSEG and RG&E say they are prepared to respond quickly and safely if outages occur. Field crews and contractors have been pre-staged across the state to speed restoration efforts if power interruptions are reported.

Customers are encouraged to stay informed by checking the companies’ websites and social media pages, and by signing up for outage alerts or downloading the NYSEG or RG&E mobile app.

The companies are also reminding customers to prepare for winter weather by charging mobile devices, keeping flashlights, batteries, water and non-perishable food on hand, and making sure vehicles are fueled.

Officials warn residents to stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines and to remain inside their vehicles if a wire falls on a car until help arrives. Downed wires and hazardous situations should be reported to NYSEG at 1-800-572-1131 or RG&E at 1-800-743-1701.

If the power goes out, customers are asked to check with neighbors, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible, and report outages using the company’s hotlines or mobile apps.

NYSEG and RG&E say public safety is their top priority. Crews will first respond to downed power lines, then assess damage, develop a restoration plan and begin repairs as quickly as conditions allow.

The companies are also offering energy-saving tips, including lowering thermostats when away from home, sealing drafts around windows and doors, keeping heating vents clear, and opening south-facing drapes during the day to let in natural warmth.
